It is known as Place Jean Jaurès in homage to the famous French politician who notably worked for social justice and education. The square is lined with historic buildings, restaurants, shops and cafes. Notable buildings include the Town Hall, built in 1896 in a Renaissance style, and St. Martin's Basilica, a 13th-century Gothic church that houses the tomb of Saint Martin, one of the most revered saints in France. The square is also known for hosting cultural and festive events throughout the year. In the summer season, a market of local craftsmen settles on the square every weekend. In addition, many concerts and festivals take place here, including the Jazz à Tours festival, which takes place every year in September.
