The link between Jean Bart (a famous French privateer who lived in the 17th century) and the Carnival of Dunkirk lies in the fact that the carnival is often seen as a celebration of the spirit of the city's privateers, who played an important role in its history. Carnival costumes and traditions, such as black hats and mussels, are inspired by the outfits that privateers wore during their missions at sea.

Moreover, there is a legend according to which Jean Bart would have organized a costume ball in Dunkirk to celebrate one of his naval victories. This legend, although probably apocryphal, further adds to Jean Bart's association with the Dunkirk Carnival tradition.
